Clothing items bought in stores are generally usually in standard sizes such as EU 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 you just choose it and wear it. If it fits more or less, you buy it and take it home. It’s easy and fast.

But for special occasion wear, the wait is worth it. This is why we choose custom clothing and there are several sub-categories to consider:

Made to Order – When a design is on the shelf and ready to order in the standard size closest to yours. Most likely, you will need alteration of clothes, fitting clothes to your figure, as the cut does not match the size of your body. Design is limited and standardized in terms of color, style and workmanship. This is typical for many designers and clothing brands.

Individual tailoring – when a dress, trousers, skirt is made according to the client’s measurements.

Tailor-made – when a dress or piece of clothing has been designed to the client’s measurements and is unique to that particular client. Instead of the existing design and pattern of the dress, there is no template for the dress. In other words, the dress is made from scratch – everything is made especially for you.

Tailoring, a five-step journey:

Bespoke is not only about the end product, but also about the unique journey and experience of working with a designer: how you enjoy the beauty and excitement of a creation from “zero” to “one-of-a-kind”. In our studio MYATELIER.UA we called these processes “Individual Journey”.

1. Comprehensive consultation – conducted to discuss and understand preferences. The functionality of the garment, as well as for what occasion, will also be taken into account to create a holistic design and comfort. You can try on different silhouettes to find out which shape and material suits you best. This real experience will allow you to better visualize which style looks “flattering”. Various fabrics will also be presented so you can appreciate their texture.
2. Visualization. The secret to getting approval for a fashion design without too much uncertainty is that you can rely not only on a photo of a model, sketches or 3D images, as most designers do, but by actually putting the chosen fabric on a mannequin. Therefore, it is possible to better visualize dresses, skirts before they are sewn.
3. Fitting and layout – a sample of a dress, a piece of clothing from a substitute fabric with similar properties of the intended fabric is sewn according to the measurements. This is to ensure that the fit and seamline look good on the client. This fitting is made to order only. For men’s tailoring, a tailored suit is suitable for the same purpose.
4. Details and handwork – some models of dresses require lace appliqués and draping. These are unique details that ensure that the dress is not a copy. All details of drapery and lace will be hand-sewn to the real dress for the final fitting.
5. Final fitting – the actual dress can be made prior to the final fitting. Any minor size adjustments will be made, especially around the waist. If it’s a strapless dress, getting the waist right is critical.
